Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin has been banned from competitors for six months due to his assist for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Worldwide Chess Federation (FIDE) stated on Monday.
The 32-year-old Karjakin, who challenged Magnus Carlsen for the world title in 2016, has defended his nation’s actions on social media in latest weeks, drawing intense criticism from the chess world.
“Sergey Karjakin is discovered responsible of breach of article 2.2.10 of the FIDE Code of Ethics, and is sanctioned to a worldwide ban of six months from collaborating as a participant in any FIDE rated chess competitors, taking impact from the date of this determination, 21 March 2022,” the governing physique stated in a press release.
Karjakin, who was born in Crimea, represented Ukraine till 2009 and has been a vocal supporter of Russian president Vladimir Putin.
One other Russian grandmaster, Sergei Shipov, was not sanctioned for his pro-Russia feedback as a result of the FIDE dominated that they had been of a “barely completely different and fewer provocative character than those made by Karjakin”.
The ban places Karjakin’s participation within the Candidates Match, which begins on June 16, doubtful.
